9/17/01 - Fortunately for us, the big market in San Miguel is adjacent to the Hotel Quinta Loreto. As we bought the crafts, we made several trips carrying them back to our room. Our shopping took most of the day, and then we spent several hours loading everything into the van and getting packed to leave the next morning.
9/18/01 - We left San Miguel at 8:30 a.m. Because of the 9/11 incident, we expected problems and delays crossing the border - especially since the van was packed so full. Once we reached the border, getting cleared through took less than two minutes. The only delay had been having to sit in line in the vehicle, waiting uncomfortably in the hot sun for our turn. Our air conditioner had broken while we were in San Miguel. Until about an hour from the border we had been quite comfortable because of the higher altitudes.
We don't like to drive in Mexico after dark, but coming back, we kept driving until we got home. It's a 900-mile trip, which took about 17 hours, including the time it took to turn in our car papers and then get cleared through the border.
We had a wonderful 2,627 mile trip. We looked forward to offering our wonderful arts and crafts at local shows.
