The Kerrville Folk Festival, May 2000

Here we're having our picture taken as we look through the door of a teepee.

We pitched our little tent beside the huge "Camp Stupid" tent, the fun group from Anderson Fair in Houston. The music was outstanding! Things didn't really get rolling at Camp Stupid until about 11:00 p.m., and then continued until 6:00 or 7:00 a.m.

The campground toilets are all "outhouse" type and the open-air shower room has four shower heads along one wall; the water is "solar heated" - it was always cold but the showers were refreshing nevertheless. We cooked our own food with our little camp stove. Saturday night there was a big storm. We hadn't gotten around to buying a new tent - and we discovered that ours leaked pretty badly. Tired of being soaked, we went into the Camp Stupid tent around 2:00 a.m. and joined the festivities the rest of the night. The sunshine dried our bedding the next day and we had a wonderful sleep Sunday night.

I copied the following paragraph from The Kerrville Folk Festival web page:

"The Kerrville Folk festival is held annually at the Quiet Valley Ranch, 9 miles south of Kerrville on Texas Hwy 16. Starting on the Thursday before Memorial Day at the end of May, the music and good times go on for 18 days with performances by more than 100 artists such as Peter Yarrow and Butch Hancock. Interspersed between weekends are other events including workshops in
songwriting and booking and management for touring artists. The annual Kerrville New Folk songwriting competition is held on the first weekend and draws some of the best of America's emerging songwriters. Award winners are recognized at a special concert on the second weekend."

The Kerrville Folk Festival was a magical time. Everyone camps on the grounds. They told us that on busy weekends, 30 to 40,000 people are in attendance. In addition to scheduled performances on the stage, performances by talented individuals can be heard day and night at many camp sites. People wander from camp to camp listening to the different entertainers, and the music continues almost 24 hours a day.
